What is CIPLE?

CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the A2-level Portuguese language certification issued by CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação e Certificação de Português Língua Estrangeira) at the University of Lisbon. CAPLE is accredited by ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe), and the exam is aligned with Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It tests European Portuguese.

At A2 level, candidates can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance — such as personal information, shopping, local geography, and employment. They can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar topics.

CIPLE Exam Structure

The exam has three components. The final result is the weighted total of all three:

Total duration: approximately 2 hours, plus a 15-minute break. The pass mark is 55% overall. Results are classified as Suficiente (55–69%), Bom (70–84%), or Muito Bom (85–100%).

Who Needs CIPLE?

• Portuguese citizenship: applicants for Portuguese nationality must prove A2-level Portuguese proficiency. CIPLE is the most widely used exam for this purpose.
• Permanent residence: applicants for permanent residence in Portugal use the same A2 certificate as language proof.
• Personal milestone: many learners take CIPLE as a formal checkpoint in their Portuguese learning journey, even without a legal requirement.

How Hard is CIPLE?

CIPLE is an A2 exam, so the level itself is basic — but the format catches many candidates off guard: the audio plays only twice, the reading texts are denser than most course materials, and the speaking test is taken in pairs with two examiners present.

Registering for CIPLE

The fee is €95 and places at popular centres fill quickly ahead of citizenship application waves — most candidates register several months in advance.
