Portugal's citizenship culture test — practice quiz

The 2026 nationality law added a test on Portuguese culture and democratic values. Practise the five subject areas the law names.

Honest note: the official test is not regulated yet. Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 (18 May 2026) requires it and names the subject areas, but the portaria defining the format, length and pass mark has not been published. This quiz is practice on those areas — not the official exam. We will update this page when the real rules appear.

    • 🏰History of Portugal — foundation, discoveries, the republic, 25 April 1974
    • 🎭Culture and national identity — symbols, language, fado, literature, heritage
    • 🏛️Political organisation — the Constitution, President, parliament, municipalities, the EU
    • ⚖️Rights and duties — equality, freedoms, health and education, taxes, voting
    • 🧾Portuguese society — NIF, SNS, schools, Segurança Social, everyday civic life

    Questions about the culture test

Is there really a culture test for Portuguese citizenship?

Yes — Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 of 18 May 2026 added a test on Portuguese culture and democratic values as a requirement for naturalisation. The law names the subject areas, but the portaria that will define the official format, length and pass mark has not been published yet.

So is this quiz the official test?

No, and nobody can offer that yet. This is practice on the five subject areas the law itself names: history, culture and national identity, political organisation and institutions, citizens' rights and duties, and Portuguese society. When the official format is published we will say so plainly.

Does the culture test replace the CIPLE language exam?

No. Proof of Portuguese at A2 level stays mandatory — for most people that is the CIPLE exam. The culture test is an additional requirement on top of it.

How should I prepare while the rules are not final?

The subject areas are already fixed by the law, so learning them is not wasted: the constitution and how the state works, the main dates of Portuguese history, national symbols and culture, your rights and duties, and everyday civic life. Meanwhile the language requirement is certain, so CIPLE preparation is the safest use of your time.
