CIPLE Practice Test: How to Use a Full Timed Mock Exam

CIPLE Practice Test: How to Use a Full Timed Mock Exam

    ยท7 min read

Exercises teach you Portuguese; a full timed mock teaches you the exam. It is the only way to find out where you run out of time, how tired you are by the listening, and which component is really dragging your score down. When I sat the real CIPLE, the thing that surprised me was not a question type but the pace, which is why I rebuilt every mock on CIPLE Ready afterwards (the story is here).

Where to find CIPLE practice tests

    • CAPLE's official sample. Free on the CIPLE page: the reading and writing paper, the listening paper with its audio, and the answer key. There is no speaking sample. Do it, but only once you are close to ready, because there is only one.
    • The free 5-minute mock CIPLE. Our short quiz with reading and listening questions is a quick diagnostic, not a full exam. Good for deciding where to start.
    • Full timed mocks. CIPLE Ready has 10 full mock exams with the real structure and timing, listening played exactly twice and AI feedback on your two texts and spoken answers. Mock exam 1 is free.
    • Books and other platforms. Our roundup of CIPLE prep tools compares them honestly.

How to sit one like the real thing

A mock only helps if it behaves like the exam. Set it up like this:

    1. Same order and timing. Reading and writing, 75 minutes. A 15-minute break. Listening, 30 minutes. Speaking, about 15 minutes per pair.
    2. Same rules. No phone, no dictionary, no notes, no pausing. Texts in pen. Every recording played twice, no more.
    3. One sitting. The whole thing in one go, ideally at the time of day you will sit the real exam: international sessions start the written paper at 15:00, CIPLE-P sessions in Portugal at 09:00.
    4. Speaking out loud. Record your answers, or better, practise with a partner, since the real speaking is in pairs.

    How to score it

Mark reading and listening with the answer key. For writing and speaking you need someone, or something, to judge them: a tutor, a fluent friend or an AI check. Then weight the three components the way CAPLE does:

    ComponentYour scoreWeightPoints
    Reading & Writing70%45%31.5
    Listening50%30%15
    Speaking60%25%15
    Total61.5%: pass, Suficiente

The pass mark is 55% of the weighted total; Bom starts at 70% and Muito Bom at 85%. Notice what the example shows: a weak listening paper did not sink the result, but it took away the margin.

What to do with the result

    • Do not retake the same mock straight away. You will remember the answers, and the score will lie to you.
    • Read every mistake. Was it vocabulary, a grammar point, a trap in the options, or time?
    • Spend the next week on the weakest component. The guides to the listening paper, the reading and writing paper and the speaking test show what to train.
    • Then take the next mock and compare component by component, not just the total.

    How many, and when

Take one mock early as a baseline, so you know the format and where you stand. Then about one a week. Keep two for the last two weeks before the exam. If you have less time, our preparation timeline has a shorter plan.

You are ready when your mocks sit comfortably above 55%, say 65% or more, with no component collapsing. A mock at 56% leaves no room for a bad listening day.

CIPLE Ready is not affiliated with CAPLE or the University of Lisbon.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there an official CIPLE practice test?

Yes. CAPLE publishes one free sample exam on its CIPLE page: the reading and writing paper, the listening paper with its audio, and the answer key. There is no official sample for speaking.

How do I calculate my CIPLE score from a practice test?

Weight the three components: reading and writing 45%, listening 30%, speaking 25%. For example, 70% in reading and writing, 50% in listening and 60% in speaking gives 31.5 + 15 + 15 = 61.5%, a pass (Suficiente).

How many mock exams should I do before the CIPLE?

One early as a baseline, then about one a week, keeping two for the last two weeks. Ten spread over two months teach you far more than ten in three days.

What score in a mock means I am ready?

A comfortable margin above 55%, not 56%. If your mocks sit around 65% or more and no component is collapsing, you are in a good place.
