What changed in Portugal's nationality law in 2026?
For applications submitted from 19 May 2026, the required period of legal residence increased from 5 years to 7 years for citizens of EU and CPLP (Portuguese-speaking) countries, and to 10 years for everyone else. Residence time now counts from the date your residence permit was issued, and only lawful residence with a valid permit counts.
I already had 5 years of residence but didn't apply before 19 May 2026. Do the old rules still apply to me?
No. The old 5-year rule only applies to applications submitted on or before 18 May 2026. If you had not submitted by then, the new 7- or 10-year requirement applies to you.
When does my residence clock start?
Under the new rules it starts on the date your first residence permit was issued — not the date you applied for it, and not the date you arrived in Portugal.
Do I still need the CIPLE A2 exam?
Yes. Proof of A2-level Portuguese remains mandatory, and the 2026 law adds a new test on Portuguese culture, history and civic rights and duties. CIPLE exam seats fill up months in advance, so plan early.
