What Is the CIPLE Exam? Everything You Need to Know in 2026

    ·8 min read

If you are planning to apply for Portuguese citizenship or permanent residency, you have probably heard about the CIPLE exam. But what exactly is it, how does it work, and how hard is it? In this guide I will explain everything you need to know.

    What does CIPLE stand for?

CIPLE stands for Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira, which translates to Initial Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language. It is part of the CAPLE system (Centro de Avaliação e Certificação de Português Língua Estrangeira), run by the University of Lisbon.

The CIPLE corresponds to the A2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This is the level Portugal requires for citizenship and permanent residency applications.

Who needs to take the CIPLE exam?

You need to take CIPLE if you are:

    • Applying for Portuguese citizenship through naturalization (after 5+ years of residency)
    • A third-country national applying for permanent residency
    • A Golden Visa holder applying for citizenship
    • Applying for citizenship through marriage to a Portuguese citizen (sometimes required)

Some people are exempt: children under 18 who attend Portuguese schools, people with disabilities that prevent them from taking the exam, and those who already hold a higher-level Portuguese certificate (B1 or above).

Alternative: Completing a 150-hour Portuguese language course at an approved institution gives you a certificate that can replace the CIPLE exam for citizenship purposes.

How is the CIPLE exam structured?

Part 1: Reading Comprehension and Written Production (45% of total)

This is the biggest section. You will read short texts like SMS messages, public notices, newspaper articles, and longer narratives. Then you answer multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions. You also write two short texts: one of 25-35 words (like a message to a friend) and one of 60-80 words (like an email or description).

Part 2: Listening Comprehension (30% of total)

You listen to audio recordings of dialogues, announcements, interviews, and short messages. Then you answer multiple choice and matching questions. The hardest part is usually the "phrase-to-place" exercise where you hear a sentence and need to identify where it would be said (pharmacy, school, post office, etc.).

Part 3: Speaking (25% of total)

This is done with an examiner and usually one other candidate. You introduce yourself, do a role-play (like buying something in a shop or going to a doctor), and discuss a topic or describe a photo.

What score do you need to pass?

You need a minimum of 55% overall to pass. This is relatively generous compared to other European citizenship language tests. Germany and the UK require B1 level, which means significantly more study.

Results use these categories: Muito Bom (Very Good, 85-100%), Bom (Good, 70-84%), Suficiente (Pass, 55-69%), and Insuficiente (Fail, below 55%).

    How much does it cost?

The exam registration fee is currently between €75 and €95, depending on the test center. Payment must be made at least 24 hours before the exam date.

When and where can you take it?

CIPLE exams are offered several times a year at CAPLE-certified testing centers. In Portugal, national exam dates (called CIPLE-P) typically happen in February, March, April, June, September, and October. International exam sessions are usually in May, July, and November.

There are approximately 100 CAPLE-certified centers in more than 35 countries worldwide.

Important: Slots fill up very quickly, especially in Portugal. Register as soon as dates open. Some candidates report that by May, the only available slots are in November.

How long until you get results?

Results are typically released 6-7 weeks after the exam. The certificate takes about another month. From exam day to certificate in hand, expect 2-3 months. Plan accordingly for your citizenship timeline.

    How to prepare for CIPLE

The good news is that A2 is a basic level. If you live in Portugal and have daily contact with the language, you already know more than you think. The challenge is understanding the specific exam format and practicing under timed conditions.

    Recommended preparation includes:

    • Understanding the exam format (types of questions, timing, scoring)
    • Reviewing core A2 grammar (verb tenses, prepositions, pronouns)
    • Building vocabulary around common topics (health, shopping, directions)
    • Practicing listening comprehension with European Portuguese audio
    • Writing short texts and getting feedback on grammar and word count
    • Taking practice exams under timed conditions

    Common questions

Is CIPLE hard? For most people who have lived in Portugal for a few years, it is manageable with proper preparation. The listening section is widely considered the hardest part.

Can I take CIPLE from abroad? Yes, there are testing centers worldwide. Check the CAPLE website for locations.

How long should I prepare? Most candidates need 4-8 weeks of focused preparation if they already have basic Portuguese.

What if I fail? You can retake the exam at the next available session. There is no limit on attempts.
