You have registered for the CIPLE exam. Now what? Here is a practical 4-week preparation plan that covers every section of the exam.
Before you start: Know the format
The biggest mistake candidates make is studying Portuguese in general instead of studying for the specific exam format. The CIPLE has predictable question types. Once you know what to expect, you are already ahead.
The structure: reading + writing (45%), listening (30%), speaking (25%). You need 55% to pass.
Week 1: Grammar and Vocabulary Foundation
Grammar focus:
- Present tense (regular and irregular verbs)
- Past tense: Pretérito Perfeito
- SER vs ESTAR
- Basic prepositions: em, de, a, para, por, com
- Question words: onde, quando, como, quanto, porquê
Vocabulary: Personal information, daily routine, food, directions.
Daily practice (45-60 min): 20 min grammar, 15 min flashcards, 15 min reading.

Week 2: Listening and Reading
This is where most candidates are weakest.
Listening:
- Start with short dialogues
- Progress to longer recordings
- Practice the phrase-to-place format — the hardest exercise on the exam
- Listen to European Portuguese audio daily
Reading:
- SMS matching exercises
- Public notices with questions
- Longer articles with inference questions — the real exam requires understanding implications, not just finding words

Week 3: Writing and Speaking
Writing has two tasks: short (25-35 words) and longer (60-80 words). Use at least 2 tenses. Use connectors (porque, mas, também, depois). Always count your words.
Speaking:
- Part 1: About you — prepare and practice out loud
- Part 2: Role-play — shopping, doctor, hotel, restaurant
- Part 3: Discuss a topic or describe a photo
Week 4: Mock Exams
Stop studying new material. Start testing yourself. Take 2-3 full mock exams under timed conditions. After each one, review every wrong answer.
The day before: no cramming, light review, prepare your ID and pen, sleep well.
Exam Day Tips
- Arrive 30 minutes early
- Read questions before reading the text
- In listening: read options BEFORE audio plays
- In writing: count your words
- In speaking: ask "Pode repetir, por favor?" if needed
- Do not spend too long on one question
- Trust your first answer
