Failed the CIPLE? How to Read Your Result and Pass the Re-sit

Failed the CIPLE? How to Read Your Result and Pass the Re-sit

    ·7 min read

An Insuficiente feels like a wall, especially when a residency or citizenship file is waiting on the certificate. But a CIPLE re-sit is one of the most fixable problems in the whole process: there is no attempt limit, sessions in Portugal run most months, and your result tells you exactly where the points went.

    What your result shows

On CAPLE's results page you enter your candidate code and see your classification with your percentage in each skill: reading, writing, listening and speaking. If you did not pass, you also get a Comunicação de Resultados instead of a certificate, collected at your exam centre 15–20 working days after the results are published, with the same figures.

The pass mark is 55% of the weighted total, with no minimum per component. So the question is not "which part did I fail?" but "where are the cheapest points?".

    Find the cheapest points

Because the components carry different weights, the same improvement is worth different amounts:

If you gain 10 points in…Your total goes up by
the reading and writing paper (45%)4.5 points
    listening (30%)3 points
    speaking (25%)2.5 points

If you were at 50%, you need five more points. A big jump in your weakest skill usually costs less effort than a small gain in your strongest. In my own result, the two live components, listening (72) and speaking (75), were my weakest, against 90 in reading and 99 in writing. They are the parts you can't check on your own, and where prepared people lose points.

    Is a re-mark worth it?

Only if you were very close, say 53 or 54%. A re-mark (reavaliação) costs €25 and must be requested within five working days of the results, by email to CAPLE or through your centre. Every component is marked again by a different team and the answer comes within 25 working days. The €25 is not refunded whatever happens, and CAPLE gives no detailed feedback on your answers. If you were at 45%, keep the €25 for preparation.

    When to re-sit

Book the next session that leaves you enough time to fix the weak part: four to eight weeks is realistic for most people. In Portugal the CIPLE-P runs most months except August and December; abroad, sessions are in May, July and November. Registration closes 21 days before the exam, the fee is €95 again and you sit every paper again. Booking the very next date with no change in how you prepare usually gives you the same result.

A plan built on your weakest component

Spend most of your time on the weakest component, but keep the others warm with short sessions so they don't slip.

    Then prove it with mocks

Two or three weeks before the re-sit, take a full timed practice test. Score it with the weights, compare it to your real result component by component, and keep going until you have a margin, not 56%. CIPLE Ready's 10 full mock exams follow the real structure and timing with listening played exactly twice, and the readiness score shows each section separately, so you can see the weak part move. Mock exam 1 is free.

CIPLE Ready is not affiliated with CAPLE or the University of Lisbon.

    Frequently asked questions

How many times can I take the CIPLE?

As many times as you need; there is no attempt limit. You can sit only one CAPLE exam per session, and each sitting costs the €95 fee.

Do I have to re-sit the whole CIPLE or only the part I failed?

The whole exam. The CIPLE is passed or failed on the weighted total of all components, so you sit every paper again.

Is it worth asking for a re-mark?

Only if you were very close to 55%. A re-mark costs €25, must be requested within five working days of the results, re-marks every component with a different team and is not refunded whatever the outcome.

How soon can I re-sit the CIPLE?

At the next session that still has registration open. In Portugal the CIPLE-P runs most months except August and December; abroad, sessions are in May, July and November. Registration closes 21 days before the exam.
